The two Windmills on the hill of Agios Nikolaos

The two Windmills on the hill of Agios Nikolaos, buildings of the 18th century. The two Windmills on the hill of Ag. Nikolaou or "Hill of the Mills" are buildings of the 18th century and the only surviving of the 10 mills that were built in the first post-revolutionary years in Salamina. The mills were built by guilds of special master mill builders, they have a tower-shaped kuluroconic form with visible masonry and limestone. The door faces the east. Also there are two windows in Hanoi, one to the east and the other to the west. Their roof is made of grass in the shape of a dome. The purpose of their operation was to meet the food needs of the island. They operated alongside horse mills and hand mills until the last twenty years of the 19th century. Then their operation stopped as the first two steam powered flour mills were established and operated on the beach of Salamina. (The text was written by Ms. Maria Butsi)
